"[W]e attribute much of our nationally recognized success regarding school uniforms to the Assistance League, which has clothed thousands of school children whose families cannot afford to buy uniforms.  We need and deeply appreciate the Assistance League’s continued and expanded support."

Since 1940, the noteworthy philanthropic programs of Assistance League of Long Beach are the inspiration of the dedicated volunteers who continue to fulfill their mission “to create a community of volunteers to identify and deliver philanthropic services."

Assistance League of Long Beach is the largest chapter of National Assistance League and is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) corporation comprised of more than 900 hands-on members. They provide more than 85,000 volunteer hours annually that enrich the lives of over 15,000 Long Beach residents every year.

President's Message
February 2010

Imagine, Believe, Achieve!

Happy New Year to you all! The last seven months have flown by with many exciting activities underway at Assistance League of Long Beach. As we look back on those months, we should be very proud of all that we have accomplished.

Three main components make our organization so effective: our philanthropic programs, membership, and our fundraising efforts to support our programs. All of our philanthropic programs are on track to meet or exceed our goals. Our new member classes are well integrated into the organization. Established members are busy in all aspects of our mission, and our 5th VP Membership Sharon Denham is working to find ways to keep nonvoting members involved. In fundraising efforts, we have launched the Endowment Program and had a successful fundraising event in DestinationUnknown. Thrift Shop sales are exceeding expectations, and Glitz was a huge success.

But we are now in 2010! The remainder of the year promises to bring equally exciting events.

On the philanthropic programs front, we are working hard to meet our year’s goals and imagine new ways of operating programs to better meet the needs of the Long Beach community.

For membership, chapter and auxiliaries are recruiting people who might be interested in joining us. Remember, one size doesn’t fit all. It’s good to think of people who might be interested in one of our auxiliaries, if not chapter. We will be having informational meetings in upcoming months. Check the “Dates to Remember” in Happy Talk or on our website at www.allb.org.

Regarding fundraising, we are planning for the launch of the Annual Giving Program led by Kathy Lingle, our 2nd VP Fund Development, and Arline Walter as Annual Giving Chairman. One of the objectives of this program is to encourage members and community supporters to give as much as they can to directly support our philanthropic programs and organization. As we have grown - to help keep pace with growing needs in Long Beach – we have to transition to an even greater culture of giving.

We are also planning for year two of our Endowment Program. Suzanne Poulsen has led a sub-committee to select an artist to do another set of illustrative paintings about our philanthropic programs. These will be unveiled at the 2nd Legacy Society Reception on June 13, 2010. A workshop in February will educate and inform members about the benefits and options of planned giving.

As I close, I just want to say how much I am enjoying serving as your President. I welcome any suggestions or feedback you have. I hope you are enjoying the monthly Beachside Chats sent by e-mail. If you want a hard copy or want to be added to the e-mail distribution, please contact Melinda at melinda@allb.org.

You all do so much to make Assistance League of Long Beach the amazing organization it is, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart!
