It’s the beginning
of our new year at Assistance League of Long Beach and we’re off and
running! The days have been busy with our Philanthropic Programs and
fundraising efforts in full swing. Here are a few highlights:
Operation School
Bell®
Rick Rackers and
chapter members clothed 1,600 Head Start students in early June. This
year we were so fortunate to have staff from Keesal, Young and Logan
help us with this project. It was inspirational to see the business
committee members help us in delivering this very important and much
needed service!
Orthodontic
Program
Our Orthodontic
Program had its first new patient screening and around 115 new students
will be accepted into the program. We currently have over 700 students
in braces and retainers. Many thanks to the orthodontic staff,
Assistance Leaguemembers and volunteer orthodontistswho make this possible three times per year.
Long Beach Pro/Am
Golf Tournament
We are proud to be
helping at the Long Beach Pro/Am Golf Tournament on July 29, 2009 and
August 1 and 2, 2009. This is a fundraising event for Assistance League
and is a lot of fun for members and the community.
Thrift Shop
Upcoming special events include:
Father’s Day, Hawaiian, and Red, White and Blue in June. Cats and
Dogs, Figurines and Disney Memorabilia in July, and Western and Heritage
in August. Please take a look at our Thrift Shop page for more
detail.
Endowment Legacy Society
The Assistance League of Long Beach
Philanthropic Center was the setting for the June 7, 2009 reception
honoring founding members of the Legacy Society, a small group of
members who have pledged to include Assistance League in their estate
plans or have given direct donations to the newly established endowment
fund.
The event culminated with the unveiling
of the Legacy and Endowment Wall. The purpose of the Wall is to be a
growing tribute to the individuals who make Assistance League
Philanthropic Programs possible as well as to recognize the
organization’s work in the community, was a collaboration between
architect John Berley, graphic designer, Alexa McNabb, and artist
Jonathan Puls. Mr. Puls created 9 paintings, which
illustrate the individual Philanthropic Programs
of Assistance League of Long Beach. He shared the following with the
assembled guests:
“It is
my hope than in some small way these canvases will remind those who
visit this center of the power of philanthropy and of the joy that both
giving and receiving offer to us all.”
I look forward to a very productive and
fun year where we all work together to imagine,
believe and achieve for the betterment of our
community. I plan to update this message regularly and look forward to
your comments and ideas ANYTIME!
