History
Assistance League was formed in 1935 and is now comprised of more than
100 chapters nationwide. It is a nonprofit corporation whose volunteer
members administer and staff philanthropic programs that serve specific
needs of local communities.
Assistance League of Long Beach, a chapter of Assistance League, was
chartered in 1940. With over 900 members, Assistance League of Long
Beach is the largest chapter of Assistance League. Chapter has four
auxiliaries: Rick Rackers,
Las Hermanas,
CAMEO, and
Assisteens®. Last year,
members donated more than 40,000 hours of service to touch the lives of
thousands of men, women and children of Long Beach.
This year, Assistance League of Long Beach will provide braces for 400
children at our Orthodontic Center
and school uniforms for nearly 3,000 children through our
Operation School Bell®. We will also
award scholarships to
students at California State University, Long Beach and Long Beach City
College. Other projects include ALa
Carte, crafts for children at Miller Children’s Hospital;
Kids on the Block™, troops of
puppeteers performing for children and seniors;
Assault Survivor Kits®, working with
Community Hospital; and Howard
Collection, a museum quality collection of Asian artifacts.
All of our projects are supported by member service hours and funds
raised from our Assistance League Thrift & Vintage Shop, community fundraisers,
grants, and donations. Proceeds from fundraising are returned to
our community.
