CAMEO Holds Re-Imagine Fundraiser

Once a year the Long Beach CAMEO ladies invite about 1,000 of their best friends to enjoy an afternoon of great food, fashions, and fun to raise money for their mentoring program.  On March 27, 2010, the Long Beach Convention Center was transformed to reflect this year’s theme -- “Re-Imagine".

It focused on the four “R’s” -- recycling, reduce, reusing, and re-imagining -- everything from the invitations to the centerpieces feature recycled materials, reused “trash” and re-imagined artwork. CAMEO committee members believe it helped showcase the steps that individuals can take to participate in helping to make a difference in preserving our environment.

Fashion Show Chairman Michelle Molina stated, “CAMEO members have been working so hard to develop a wonderful auction and program to raise awareness of and funds for our mentorship philanthropic program. We are hoping everyone can re-imagine ways to connect with young people while connecting with our most valuable resource, the earth.”

The award-winning fashion show by Carin Holmenas and Gary Baker featured Lourdes Chavez Couture, Riga Designs, and Shahla Dorriz, and included a very special boutique from Deborah Lindquist, Eco Fashion’s premiere brand of unique environmentally conscious couture and ready-to-wear apparel.

CAMEO is a professional auxiliary of Assistance League of Long Beach and was founded in 1987. For more than twenty years, CAMEO volunteers have provided a unique one-on-one mentoring and financial support program which targets promising Long Beach area high school and Long Beach City College students. CAMEO members mentor 45-50 students each year to higher levels of achievement by providing encouragement and support for each student’s personal and academic development. This comprehensive curriculum, designed to enhance each student’s educational, cultural, and social development, complements our mentoring outreach.

Of greatest value for the young people is building relationships with professional women who can provide encouragement, leadership, and friendship during their schooling.  The students are identified by their high school advisors during freshman year, and must apply and agree to participate regularly with programs.
